KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two different run-type events are the latest to go virtual in Kalamazoo due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To begin with, the Bronson Children’s Hospital Run & Walk, which begins later this week, is providing different options for how to participate.
“This is our annual fundraising event that we do every year, and it’s very important for our team specifically because the funds raised help support our program,” Child Life Specialist at Bronson’s Children Hospital Corey Richardson said in an interview with WKZO.
The pandemic has caused the event organizers to adapt to the new circumstances.
“It’s gonna be a little different this year because it’s gonna be a virtual event, but we’re still very excited and eager and ready to have as many participants as possible,” Richardson said. “The participants can decide where and when they want to run or walk, and again, those dates are any time between September 18 and September 27. Everyone who registers will receive a packet in the mail, and that has a T-shirt and a finisher medal.”
Organizers had recommended getting signed up for the event by September 10, but the registration remains open through September 27.
“There’s still plenty of time to register, we already started sending out packets last week, but they’ve only taken a few days to get to people’s homes,” Richardson said. “You can still participate even if your packet hasn’t arrived yet.”

Meanwhile, the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC) will be holding its 60th anniversary run virtually, as well. The event would normally be held for Earth Day in April, but that had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
“We’ve re-imagined it into a 60th anniversary run in October,” KNC Director of Marketing and Communications Lisa Panich told WKZO.
Just like with the Bronson event, participants will have options for how to run.
“You can run at the Kalamazoo Nature Center, we’ll have three marked trails for adults and three marked trails for kids,” Panich said. “Or, you can run in your own neighborhood or wherever you want, and just report in that you’ve done your run during the month of October.”
The registration for this event has been extended through October 7, leaving more time to get signed up.
“The only difference is that you would pick up your shirt packet at the end of the month instead of during the month,” Panich said. “With that extra registration, you’ll still get your run shirt and medallion. We urge everyone to participate, Kalamazoo Nature Center is all about getting people outside and active wherever they are.”
