KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The wife of a former doctor accused of reusing medical devices and fraud has been sentenced to probation, WOOD TV and WWMT reported Wednesday.
Last year, Dr. Roger Beyer, who owned Urological Solutions of Michigan and Women’s Health Care Specialists in Kalamazoo, had been accused of instructing his staff to reuse anorectal devices on multiple patients. These devices are approved for one-time use only. Staff who filed the complaint said they were only cleaned occasionally.
In the administrative complaint document, one staff member stated that, “she re-used the Prometheus RPS [rectal pressure sensor] across multiple patients and that she estimates that a sensor was used over 100 times before being replaced.”
At that time, Beyer told WOOD TV that the allegations were not true and that it was a big misunderstanding.
A month later, Beyer closed both of his clinics.
On Wednesday, news outlets reported that his wife Susan Wright, who was a nurse working under Beyer, has been sentenced to three years of probation for her role in the case.
Court documents say that Wright knowingly reused these devices even though they were marked as single-use items. She also has to pay $461,923 in restitution costs for Medicare fraud and another $5,000 in fines, according to WWMT. Authorities add she knew Beyer was writing fake medical bills.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that Beyer pleaded guilty to conspiracy-related charges back in May. He will be sentenced on October 1.
