BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Marshall man is dead and three officers are on paid administrative leave following a high speed chase that led to a shooting in Battle Creek.
The shooting happened around 12:15 a.m. Saturday on Logistics Drive in Battle Creek’s Fort Custer Industrial Park on the city’s west side.
Battle Creek Police were attempting to stop a reckless vehicle in the area of Dickman Road and M-66 as the driver was swerving into oncoming traffic lanes. The two officers believed that the driver may have been intoxicated.
The driver led authorities on a chase southbound on M-66, going over 90 miles per hour. Eventually, a Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputy joined in on the chase, which continued onto Columbia Avenue, to Skyline Drive, and then to Logistics Drive where the suspect crashed into the woods.
Officers approached the vehicle on foot but then the suspect drove toward the officers and that’s when all three officers responded by firing shots. It’s still unclear how many gunshots were fired and if any struck the suspect.
The suspect, identified as a 22-year-old Marshall man, smashed into the Battle Creek Police cruiser and then crashed again in the woods.
First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
No names or any other details have been released at this time. The Michigan State Police Department is investigating the incident and both the Battle Creek Police Department and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office are cooperating with the investigation.
