CARLTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan State Police Wayland Post is investigating a fatal Barry County traffic crash that occurred Tuesday.
Around 11:30 p.m., officers were called to North Broadway Road, north of M-43 in Carlton Township.
Troopers responded to a report of a juvenile male pedestrian walking northbound on M-43 who was possibly hitchhiking. Prior to their arrival, the juvenile was able to seek assistance from a nearby residence after revealing he was the passenger of a vehicle which had just been involved in a crash.
Responding officers were able to locate the crashed vehicle at the above listed address, as well as an unresponsive adult female driver. The driver of the vehicle was later identified as a 38-year-old Hastings Township resident, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle appeared to have been traveling northbound on North Broadway Road when it drove off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, lost control, and overturned after striking an embankment. Road conditions at the time of the crash were dry, but covered in loose
gravel from recent construction.
Speed, alcohol, and drugs do not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation at this time.
