KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has another reason to thank their four-legged coworker on this National Dog Day.
On Wednesday just before 8 a.m. officers were called to the 1300 block of East Vine Street near Myers Street in the city’s Edison Neighborhood for a report of a man assaulting a woman with a baseball bat and a large machete.
The suspect fled on foot moments before first responders arrived, but luckily, Sergeant Kelly Pittelkow and her partner, K9 Norman, were in the area and responded to the scene.
K9 Norman immediately began tracking the suspect through a heavily wooded area and after over 20 minutes the man was located and taken into custody without further incident.
The 41-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested for two counts of felonious domestic assault on top of two outstanding arrest warrants for domestic assault 3rd offense and theft of a motor vehicle.
He’s now lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail and the case is being forwarded to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The victim’s condition or relation to the suspect was not released.
