KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One man is in critical condition, a driver is in custody, and another suspect is still at large after a pedestrian-involved crash on Kalamazoo’s west side.
The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. Thursday in the 4200 block of West Main Street near Northhampton Road.
Kalamazoo Township Police say a 54-year-old Kalamazoo man, who was in a wheelchair, was on the shoulder of the eastbound lane of West Main when he was struck by an eastbound pick-up truck.
He was taken to a local hospital and last listed in critical condition.
The truck driver, a 26-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on the suspicion of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury. If convicted, that charge can carry a penalty of five years in prison and a maximum fine of $5,000 dollars.
While first responders were still investigating, another driver failed to yield to the crash scene and smashed into the emergency vehicles. The suspect sped off from the area and led Michigan State Police on a high speed chase until authorities lost the driver near an apartment complex in the 2600 block of West Main Street.
The suspect’s vehicle is described as a white or silver four door sedan which sustained damage to the left front fender.
Both crashes are under investigation and anyone with more information should contact Silent Observer at (269)343-2100 or the Township of Kalamazoo Police Department at (269)488-8911.
