KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Bishop Paul J. Bradley of the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo has shared a letter of encouragement during the COVID-19 pandemic to the Catholic community.
The letter, entitled “From Darkness to Light: Hope for a New Pentecost,” Bradley details his thoughts on the state of the pandemic, as well as plans for a Mass of Thanksgiving once Masses can resume in-person gatherings.
“From my observations, besides being concerned about ourselves and our own families, I think I have seen more of a genuine concern for others’ well-being,” Bishop Paul J. Bradley writes. “There definitely appears to be a greater sense of compassion for people’s suffering everywhere.”
Bradley says there could be some positive outcomes from the end of the outbreak.
“I hope that we don’t return to an attitude of ‘looking out for Number 1’; rather that the tremendous examples of heroic generosity of true acts of self-sacrifice that we have seen in the courageous healthcare workers, first responders, employees in essential services and volunteers who have given themselves unselfishly for the good of others, will continue to be a priority for all of us,” Bradley adds.
As previously state, the Mass of Thanksgiving will be scheduled some time after the public suspension is lifted.
“While I do not know what that date is at this time, this special Mass will allow us to give thanks to God for His protection and His abiding Presence with us throughout this time,” Bradley said.

Meanwhile, the Diocese of Kalamazoo is reporting that many Catholic worshipers are watching and participating in Mass through live streams. Officials say that more than 25 Parishes in Southwest Michigan have made this option available.
