VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Following continued erosion on the Lake Michigan shoreline, State officials have announced a multi-million dollar investment into Porter Legacy Dunes in Van Buren County.
The $2.3 million grant comes by way of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources through the the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. Its purpose is to purchase the property of Porter Legacy Dunes near South Haven.
In total, 47 acres of the dunes are being invested in, along with 1,100 feet of the Lake Michigan shoreline in Van Buren County.
Officials say the dunes have not had very much development, as they serve as a habitat for many different species of animals and plants.
The end goal for the dune acquisition is to combine it with the Pilgrim Haven Natural Area, which will create a dune area of 75 acres, plus nearly 2,000 feet of accessible shoreline area.
A parking lot for the area will be expanded, along with the addition of an educational outlet with information about local species.
