UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — After days of buying at big retailers, small businesses, and online, Tuesday is all about giving.
Giving Tuesday is a global day of using your time, talents, or treasures to help a family, a local community, or even a national organization.
Local non-profits in need can be found at givingtuesday.org.
Some donations given this month can be tax deductible and some organizations match donations given on December 3rd.
But before you give away, make sure you’re giving to the right organizations.
The Better Business Bureau has “8 Tips to Help Donors Give Wisely” this holiday season.
- Watch out for name similarities
- Review the website carefully
- Avoid on-the-spot donation decisions from unfamiliar organizations
- Be wary of emotional appeals
- Check with state charity officials
- Avoid charities that don’t disclose
- Rely on standards-based evaluations
- Research tax status
More details on these points can be found on the BBB’s website.
More information can be found on the National Association of State Charity Officials (NASCO) website.
Giving Tuesday can also mean giving blood.
The Red Cross says that over 1 million units of blood could be transfused between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but busy holiday schedules make it difficult to collect in that time period.
Local blood drives can be found online at redcross.org.
