LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is ordering flags to be lowered to half-staff Thursday and Friday in memory of Democrat and Congressman Elijah Cummings.
Cummings passed away at a hospital in Baltimore on October 17th at the age of 68. He was battling long standing health complications at the time.
Governor released a statement saying, “Congressman Elijah Cummings was the definition of a true public servant. He dedicated his life to fighting for what is right, and we are all better for it. My heart is with his family and all who loved him. He will be dearly missed.”
Cummings was the first African American to serve as Speaker Pro Tempore in the Maryland House of Delegates.
Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff and raise it to full staff on Saturday.
