LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — On Monday Governor Whitmer issued a proclamation declaring October 14, 2019 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but a proposal in Lansing could change Columbus Day on a state level forever.
Since the governor’s declaration is only good for this year, Senator Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor is introducing a bill in hopes of changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day for good.
This would make Michigan the 8th state to pass such a measure.
The bill is meant to celebrate both the diversity of culture in the U.S., as well as an acknowledgement of Native American tribes in the country.
The bill has been sent to the Committee on Government Operations. It will need further review by both the Michigan House and Senate before being signed into law.
