KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners is weighing options for making West Main Street safer.
During a board meeting Tuesday, Planning Director for Oshtemo Township Julie Johnston presented the newly-created West Main Corridor Improvement Authority plan to County officials, which is a plan to make West Main a safer road.
Some commissioners declined the plan as it was written, citing further negotiations before it can be passed.
Kalamazoo County records indicate that the stretch of West Main beginning at Drake Road into Oshtemo Township had the highest rate of crashes last year.
The improvements would include provisions such as new signals and sidewalks. The project would be funded by taxing new businesses in the area with help from the County. No new taxes would be created to fund the project.
The Board has until October 12th to decide whether to opt in or not.
