KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — UPDATE: The Kalamazoo City Commission has unanimously passed the resolution encouraging state lawmakers to allow undocumented Michigan immigrants to obtain a driver’s license.
It was approved by the board at their Monday night meeting after the undocumented immigrant community of Kalamazoo brought up the concern, demanding changes.
Citizens speaking during public commentary also provided unanimous support for the resolution.
There was some controversy centered around an edit in the resolution language that had been made, but it was changed back to better reflect the voices of the immigrants.
Although this does not change the actual law, supporters believe it’s the first step to granting undocumented immigrants licenses here in Michigan.

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A new resolution allowing undocumented immigrants living in Michigan to obtain a driver’s license will be discussed by the Kalamazoo City Commission tonight.
13 other states have passed similar resolutions allowing immigrants to obtain licenses without documentation.
House lawmakers remain concerned DMV database information may be used to locate and deport immigrants using facial recognition data.
The resolution was read at a commission meeting earlier this month by several community members in both Spanish and English. If passed, it would be the very first bilingual resolution in the city.
Local supporters want cities throughout Michigan to push state officials to allow this action and become the next state that allows driver’s licenses for all.
