KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Drivers licenses for all. That is what the Undocumented Immigrant Community of Kalamazoo is proposing to the City Commission.
Nelly Fuentes brought the resolution to the board Monday night in favor of drivers licenses for all Michigan residents, regardless of immigration status.
The resolution was read by several community members in both Spanish and English, and if passed, it would be the very first bilingual resolution in the city.
Their goal is that the city commission puts this issue on their agenda for the next July 15th meeting, vote, and pass in support of the licenses.
Many residents spoke in favor of the resolution saying that citizens take their licenses for granted, and undocumented immigrants shouldn’t live in fear.
City Commissioners also seemed to support the resolution and said that they would get it on their agenda. Vice Mayor Erin Knott asked for clarification on whether this would be a legislative fix or executive action.
About 15 states already allow undocumented immigrants to receive a license, and supporters want Michigan to join the list.
