KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The Special Olympics Unified basketball state finals are returning to Kalamazoo this weekend.
Over 800 coaches, athletes, and volunteers from all around the state are expected to pack Western Michigan’s Student Recreation Center on Saturday.
Specifically 607 athletes are competing this year which marks the highest athlete turnout since 2006.
Special Olympics Michigan’s Nick Caudle says the unified basketball teams feature players both with and without intellectual disabilities all competing together with the goal of creating friendships.
The competition runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday with other activities throughout the day like a game room and physical fitness screenings.
It’s free and open to the public.
