LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer once again called for bipartisan cooperation, and she is going to need it, if she hopes to get the ambitious agenda she laid out during her State of the State address accomplished.
She wants to do roads and bridges of course and improve the infrastructure for making sure people have safe water.
She also wants to make Michigan the first state in the Midwest to offer every high school graduate with at least a B average funding assistance for at least the first two years of higher education, whether that be at a Community College, a four year school or vocational education.
She wants a budget on her desk before summer break.
House Ways and Means Chair Brandt Iden says there were a lot of good ideas but he’s not sure the state can afford them all. State Senator Sean McCann says all that will be addressed in her proposed budget due next month.
McCann suggests that while the Legislature must approve anything she wants to do, she must also approve anything the Republican Majority would like to pursue.
Kalamazoo Democrat Jon Hoadley was particularly happy about her goal of adding the LGBTQ community to the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights act.
Emmett Township Republican Matt Hall says the roads and how they are rebuilt are his top priority but he was disappointed there were not more specifics in Whitmer’s speech.
