GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of Emergency in the city of Grand Rapids, an official designation that makes the community eligible for state assistance and funding.
That could mean help from state crews to remove fallen trees, but will more than likely mean reimbursement for city costs from clean-ups, the operation of shelters and police overtime.
Most of the outages in the Grand Rapids area have been repaired.
Just over 20,000 Consumers Customers remain without power. They are the victims of rural outages that may only affect a few customers and fell lowest on the list of repair priorities for Consumers. Some of them may have to wait until Monday to get their power restored.
Some of the warming shelters in the Grand Rapids region closed Saturday and others will be closing later today as power was restored and people returned home.
