LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A group that bought ads supporting Governor Gretchen WHitmer has been slapped with a $37,500 fine for a campaign violation.
The group Build a Better Michigan spent $2.4-million running two spots.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has ruled that the group was only permitted under campaign laws to make ads that advocated on Issues. She says this ad clearly focused on advocating Whitmer.
Republican Party officials filed a complaint when Ruth Johnson was still Secretary of State, but she left office before issuing a decision.
The Party is now calling the fine imposed by her Democratic successor a slap on the wrist, saying that previous fines issued for similar violations were much larger.
They point out that Mark Burton, who ran BBM is now on Benson’s staff.
