HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Reactions from Michigan’s members of Congress poured out after the State-of-the-Union speech.
Zeeland Rep. Bill Huizenga emailed a statement to media, saying “the President gave a strong address outlining the strength of our economy, the need to secure our southern border, and promote a national culture that defends the unborn and respects life.”
Huizenga went on to say he believes President suggested “several areas where bipartisan cooperation can deliver solutions to the challenges facing our nation such as rebuilding infrastructure, developing life-saving medical treatments, and lowering the cost of prescription drugs.”
His fellow Republican House member, St. Joe Rep. Fred Upton, used social media, writing, “If this is a pivot to bipartisanship, I say it’s about time. We can’t build anything if we don’t do it together.
I hope we are truly turning the corner and I welcome the President’s offer to heal divisions and move forward.”
Sen. Gary Peters expressed a willingness to work on bipartisan plans for jobs and skills development.
Senator Debbie Stabenow wrote that she is “deeply concerned about the direction of our country reflected in the President’s address this evening. We need to come together and find bipartisan solutions on issues important to Michigan like fixing our nation’s infrastructure, lowering the cost of health care, and keeping jobs in the United States.”
Staabenow also said this week she supports the bipartisan effort for funding for “smart, effective security at both the northern and southern borders” but would strongly oppose taking away funding from the Soo Locks to pay for that.
