OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — A Chester Township woman is being treated at Spectrum Health Butterworth and is in serious condition, after a fire at home on Christmas Day, 2018.
Police were called for help on the 22-thousand block of 24th Avenue, just after 4 p.m., according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Sykes. The woman, who has mobility issues, dropped a cigarette on her robe, he said, and called for help when a fire started breaking out.
Her 67-year-old husband called 911 and was able to pull his wife to the floor and smother the fire, he said, but the woman suffered extensive burns.
The couple’s names are being withheld. Police are calling this an accidental fire but indicated the incident remains under investigation.
