KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The Family left homeless by that fire on Simpson Street Sunday had only been living in that home for a few months. Prior to that, they had been homeless for nearly a year.
Now they are back to living temporarily in a motel room supplied by the Red Cross until they can get back on their feet.
Both Nitra Blake and her boyfriend have jobs, but it’s been a struggle.
They are looking for another rental they can afford in the Kalamazoo School District, so her six children can be eligible for The Promise Scholarships.
The Mothers of Hope have stepped forward to provide some support and are taking donations for the family online and at their facility at 603 Ada Street.
ORIGINAL STORY
KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo family has had their Christmas ruined and will head into the New Year looking for new accomodations after a fire burned them out of their north side home Sunday afternoon.
The couple and their six children all managed to escape the home in the 800 block of Simpson St. after it broke out just after 2 yesterday afternoon.
Lt Danielle Guilds says it took fire crews about 20-minutes to knock down the flames, which appear to have begun in the second story.
The home was severely damaged and is no longer habitable.
The Red Cross is helping the family get through this disaster with temporary assistance.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
