OSCEOLA COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — A total of six children nationwide have died from the flu this year, that’s still way down from the epidemic the nation went through last year, but it’s still early in the flu season.
It was announced this past week that one of those deaths occurred in Michigan, in Osceola County according to the State Dept. of Health and Human Services.
Health officials do not release the number of flu related deaths in adults, which total in the thousands because more often than not, the patient had some other chronic ailment that was made worse by the virus.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, last year’s flu season was estimated to be the deadliest since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. More than 79,000 deaths were attributed to the flu, 185 of which were children. In Michigan, two children died last year due to flu-related complications.
Doctors says everyone except for very young infants should be inoculated.
