MENDON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Two dairy farm workers were killed Wednesday morning in a fire that destroyed a home in St. Joseph County’s Mendon Township.
The fire broke out at about 3:30 a.m. in the 53000 block of Silver Street which is about a mile south of Portage Lake.
The cause of the blaze is not known. The State Police Fire Marshal office is investigating.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department says the home belonged to a local dairy farm and the two victims were employees.
One man was found on the first floor, the body of the other man was found in the basement.
Their names are being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Firefighters say the home was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.
After several hours fighting the blaze from outside, it was finally brought under control. Firefighters were on the scene until early afternoon.
