KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools have issued a statement saying that all KPS students will be given a chance to honor those who died in Parkland Florida on March 14th, the one month anniversary of the death of 17 students at the high school there.
Superintendent Michael Rice says rather than just experience the event, they want to use it as a learning moment by letting students at each of the schools determine what they will do during a 17 minute memorial.
They hope that will make it more meaningful.
They are also providing an opportunity for parents who don’t want their children to participate to opt out of the observances, especially if walk-outs are planned.
Schools across the nation are planning events on the 14th, called for the student survivors at Stoneman Douglas High School.
