KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A plea deal will mean that a Kalamazoo County man who shot his friend over drugs and dumped him along a road to die could serve less than two years in prison.
Matthew Derr was given 29-months to 15 years in prison for Possession of meth and assault with a dangerous weapon. A more serious charge was dropped in order to get the plea.
Police say the 47-year-old Derr got into an argument with Ryan Harrington last August at his home, shot him and drove his body to East Michigan and Sprinkle where he was dumped.
Sometime later a passerby spotted Harrington and called authorities. Harrington survived despite serious wounds.
With credit for time already served…Derr will have completed his minimum term in 1-year and 10 months.
