COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s official. I-94 as it runs through Comstock Township has been re-named the Chief Ed Switalski Memorial Highway.
Governor Rick Snyder has signed the legislation sponsored by Senator Margaret O’Brien of Portage.
Switalski was struck and killed by a Springfield man who was speeding and distracted by his cell phone just prior to losing control, and striking the Chief.
That driver, Brandon Clevenger was given 3-1/2 to 15 years for driving recklessly causing death.
Switalski had been called to investigate a car stranded along the Interstate that turned out to be abandoned.
O’Brien says she hopes it not only serves as a memorial, but a reminder to drivers of how quickly things can go wrong, and that they must slow down when they see emergency vehicles up ahead.
