(WKZO AM/FM) — Local groups that used to wade into traffic for “fill the boot” campaigns to raise money for good causes can hit the streets again after Governor Snyder’s signed bills allowing the practice to resume.
Such campaigns were suspended after the Attorney General ruled last year that the traffic code didn’t permit such fundraisers.
That came as a total surprise to Lion’s Clubs, Firefighters and other groups that had been employing their boots for years to raise money for good causes.
Representative Shane Hernandez sponsored the bill. He says they took testimony from a number of organizations that the loss of the boot campaigns had put a serious dent in their fundraising.
The new law requires that the collections take place during daylight hours, with volunteers who are over 18 and wearing “highly-visible” safety apparel.
