KALMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — We now know the name of the Kalamazoo victim of a suspected double murderer, who has now been charged with one of those killings.
32-year-old Zachary Patten of Portage appeared in a suicide-vest during a video arraignment in St. Joseph County Court.
He was charged with open murder, first-degree home invasion and felony firearm charges for the shooting death of Shane Richardson, his ex-wife’s new husband.
His alleged victim in Kalamazoo was 31-year-old Graciela Portillo-Esparza a mother of four who was apparently not the intended target. She reportedly intervened in a fight between Patten and her older brother, who was said to be involved in one of Patten’s ex-girlfriends.
Patten may next appear in court in Kalamazoo for arriagnment.
Funeral services for Richardson are also scheduled for Tuesday.
