KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM)– The big vote is a week from Tuesday, but students in Kalamazoo Public Schools have already picked their winners.
Hundreds of Kalamazoo high school students got a taste of Democracy thanks to the League of Women Voters and the Kalamazoo Clerk’s office. They organized a mock election that was held last week. Some students also participated as poll workers, but most just voted.
Jenny Hill with the League says she presents a short seminar in voting to the students, dispelling myths, talking about how to find information about the candidates before voting and the votes are recorded and counted.
The District released the vote tallies Thursday. The students voted for Hillary Clinton 695 to 170 and would have elected Paul Clements by nearly 2 to 1 over Fred Upton.
They used the same kind of ballots and the same tabulating machines that will be used a week from Tuesday.
The students voted on just the two races on a ballots created by the Clerk’s office just for this purpose. The completed ballots were run through an optical scan vote tabulator, just as they would be during a real election.
