SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO-AM) — Wolverine Pipeline Company has announced that a diesel oil spill from a fractured transmission line in Geneva Township has been cleaned up and the land restored.
In June, a farmer uprooting trees with a bulldozer broke the line in western Van Buren County and about 8,400 gallons of diesel spilled out into his field.
One of the reasons the Enbridge Oil Spill was so huge and devastating was that the pipeline was leaking for over half a day before anyone realized what was happening. No one, including emergency responders, were even aware that the pipeline was there because it travels underground.
Wolverine has sent a letter to residents along their lines informing them of the location, warning them to know what’s in the ground before they dig and includes a refrigerator magnet with an emergency number to call if they ever see or smell petroleum products bubbling up through the turf.
The letter doesn’t mention any of the spills or the flap over Line 5 in Northern Michigan. Just that spills are “rare.”
However, if one happens, they need to take immediate action.
