ST. JOSEPH (WKZO-AM) — A 17-year-old from Benton Harbor is the first this summer season to drown in Lake Michigan.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says 17-year-old Travonne Shannon dove off South Pier at Silver Beach in St. Joseph early Saturday evening and did not resurface at about 7:20 p.m.
The sheriff’s oepartment, the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Coast Guard joined in the search. Two hours after the recovery began, the county marine division found the body in about-14 feet of water.
Shannon was taken to Lakeland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He was a junior at Benton Harbor High School.
