BERRIEN COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — Wildlife officials have shot and killed a Michigan black bear that was the first seen as far south as northern Indiana.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the bear was killed after being caught in a trap Saturday afternoon in Grand Mere State Park near Stevensville.
The DNR decided the bear was a danger, after it tried to force its way into two occupied homes in the Stevensville area.
Southwest Wildlife Field Operations Manager Mark Sargent said relocating the bear wasn’t an option. It would have had the same problem, wherever it ended up.
The effort to trap the bear started on April 2. It was finally caught with sweets and bacon as bait on April 9.
