BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Lakeview schools will reopen with increased police presence Tuesday after a fake threat of violence posted on Facebook spread late Sunday night and forced school officials to cancel classes as a precaution.
Police determined it was just a threat and are now tracking down the source of the message.
The girl linked directly to the site was sleeping at the time and had no access to a computer. They think it was either hacked or a friend knew her password.
Meanwhile, Harper Creek Schools were forced to evacuate and send kids home early when a threatening note surfaced Monday afternoon. They will also reopen Tuesday.
A search with bomb-sniffing dogs found nothing in or around the schools.
Police officials say these are all copycat crimes that seem to blossom every spring and the students responsible might think twice about it if they knew the penalties. Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas says they’re almost always able to track and catch the students who make the threats.
Matyas said the students not only get booted out of school but face criminal prosecution, jail time, fines, and probation. It can also have serious consequences on the rest of their lives.
