KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Gov. Rick Snyder is reviewing legislation that would let grocery store gas stations in Michigan sell beer and wine.
House Majority Leader Aric Nesbitt is a sponsor.
“Resorts or golf courses, they usually have one liquor license,” Nesbitt, R-Lawton, said. “So, I was looking at allowing (that) for gas stations on the same property as the grocery store — they (already) have beer and wine just a couple hundred feet away.”
Nesbitt told Michael Patrick Shiels on Monday the legislation also helps rural gas stations.
“Those townships that only have one gas station, it allows them to be able to apply for a beer and wine license,” Nesbitt said.
Currently, gas stations need to have $250,000 in non-alcoholic merchandise to apply for the permit.
The Michigan Petroleum Association is urging a veto, claiming it will pit national grocers against mom-and-pop convenience stores.
