KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A Kalamazoo Circuit Court jury has found a Portage assistant principal not guilty of inappropriately touching a 13-year-old female student.
Kevin Doerfler claimed he fondled the girl in front of a classroom full of students with a teacher present last year. Two other students corroborated the story.
Doerfler’s attorney claimed the three students all had discipline problems, and as the dispenser of discipline at Portage West Middle School, Doerfler was targeted.
It only took the jury two hours to return with the not guilty verdicts. The 53-year-old had an otherwise unblemished record.
Portage Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Karpinski said they are currently on spring break.
Doerfler will remain on administrative leave until his employment situation can be reviewed by the administration in light of the not guilty verdict on the second-degree criminal sexual conduct charge.
