KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The family of mass-shooting suspect Jason Dalton has released a statement through his attorneys.
“There are no words which can express our shock and disbelief, and we are devastated and saddened for the victims and the families of the victims,” it reads. “We cannot comprehend the grief which you are feeling and, while it seems woefully inadequate, we are deeply sorry and are praying for everyone affected.”
Dalton, 45, is accused of severely wounding a woman in front of her children at a complex of townhomes northeast of Kalamazoo, killing a man and his son at a car dealership and fatally shooting four others outside a Cracker Barrel near Interstate 94. A fifth victim outside the restaurant remains on life support.
Dalton was arraigned on Monday. He was formally charged with six counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and eight counts of felony firearm. Depending on the status of the surviving victims, those charges may change.
Lt. Dale Hinz with the Michigan State Police said Dalton came close to admitting the crimes during his interrogation.
