KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s a dream project for Kalamazoo’s downtown, and last night the City Commission enthusiastically approved selling Parking Lot #9 for the construction of a new $70-million building, next to the Arcadia Creek Festival Place on Water Street.
It will be the new home of the Kalamazoo Promise and the Promise Institute, and Kalamazoo Community in Schools. The owners will also rent office space to Southwest Michigan First, making it a show place for visitors to the community.
Patty Owens with Catalyst Development says two of the seven stories will be dedicated to residential space, with a large percentage of the units dedicated to affordable housing, and to top it all off, there will be three floors of parking.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell says it fits well into the city’s long term needs, goals and plans.
Catalyst Development plans to break ground Monday and have it ready for tenants in 2020.
