KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Doctors monitoring the progress of the youngest Kalamazoo shooting victim say she could be heading home in about a month.
They were expecting Abigail Kopf to leave a rehab facility in Grand Rapids in about 10 weeks, but the 14-year-old’s been making significant progress, and now a four-to-six-week timetable has been set. The child is now swallowing soft foods and liquids, communicating through a tablet, getting out of bed on her own and walking without assistance.
The Harper Creek Middle School student was initially pronounced dead after 45-year-old Jason Dalton allegedly opened fire on the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel in Texas Township on Feb. 20. Four were killed in that shooting, including Kopf’s grandmother, and a total of six died in three shootings that day.
A GoFundMe to offset Kopf’s medical expenses has eclipsed $65,000.
The second survivor, 25-year-old Tiana Carruthers, is also edging closer to recovery. $17,000 was raised for her during a benefit concert last weekend.
