BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — The youngest survivor of the February shooting rampage in Kalamazoo will need additional surgery after an infection developed at the site of one of her incisions.
“While we are treating it with antibiotics, it is a sign that part of the skin damaged at the exit wound isn’t (connecting) because it’s too tight (there’s just not enough there),” Abigail Kopf’s family said on Facebook. “So, beginning next week, she must go into surgery.”
The family said, if the infection is at the surface layer, only a skin graft will be needed. If the infection has reached her skull, the 3D-printed plate in the 14-year-old’s head will have to be replaced
The plate was installed last month.
Kopf, a student at Harper Creek Middle School in Battle Creek, was the only person to survive the shooting outside the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Texas Township. Four were killed during that attack, allegedly by 45-year-old Uber driver Jason Dalton.
Hamlet, Kopf’s pet pig, will also have to be put down due to old age and leg problems.
“When it rains, it pours,” the post said.
