LANSING (WKZO) — Some online retailers including Amazon.com will now be required to charge state sales tax to Michigan customers at the time of an Internet purchase. Supporters of the new law, called the “Mainstreet Fairness Act,” cheered the signing of the legislation by Governor Snyder Thursday.
The Michigan Retailers Association has been trying for over a decade to get the law passed, saying Internet-based companies which didn’t have to charge sales tax have had a competitive advantage over brick-and-mortar stores.
