BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, certain trash pickup services have been suspended in some Southwest Michigan areas.
All affected services are being suspended due to Governor Whitmer’s “stay home, stay safe” order.
The City of Battle Creek is temporarily suspending Bulk Trash Pickup, which was scheduled to start Monday. Anyone who places large items for disposal on the curb will receive a tag from Waste Management, asking them to take it back for now.
Additionally, the city is suspending curbside yard waste pickup. The public yard waste drop-off site is also closed until further notice. Further, officials are also postponing the Spring Cleanup and all other bulk cleanups.
Citizens in Battle Creek can keep up with the latest information on the city’s website, battlecreekmi.gov/coronavirus.
Similar measures are also being implemented in Portage, which is indefinitely postponing its own Spring Cleanup event. The City of Portage contracts with Waste Management to perform the Spring Cleanup program, who released the following statement:
“In order for Waste Management to maintain its focus on municipal solid waste collection and disposal, and due to the reduced number of employees in the field, effective Wednesday, April 1, 2020, Waste Management is temporarily suspending the performance of spring bulk clean-ups, which are non-essential during this period of emergency.”
Updates to the status of the Spring Cleanup program will be made at www.portagemi.gov and on the city Facebook page.
Meanwhile, Kalamazoo Township officials say that Republic Services has cancelled the April 6-10 Bulk Trash Pickup. Republic has also delayed the start of the seasonal weekly yard waste pickup, which would have begun on April 1.
Weekly trash pickups will still continue as usual, but yard waste removal is not considered “essential.”
As a result, the Township is asking for civilians to hold off on placing piles of waste on curbs now, as there is currently no way to remove them. Currently, the next bulk trash pickup is scheduled in July.
In the meantime, the Township will stay in contact with Republic Services to decide if the May Leaf and Brush pick-up will have to be delayed or any other changes made.
Citizens in Kalamazoo Township can stay informed with the latest information at the official Township website.
