KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Officials with the City of Kalamazoo’s Department of Public Services say about 30,000 gallons of material discharged from a private sanitary sewer manhole into Portage Creek.
The incident occurred on private property in the 300 block of West Kilgore Road in the city’s South Westnedge neighborhood around 11:15 a.m. Monday. The private system is not maintained by the City of Kalamazoo.
The blockage was removed about an hour later but the wastewater flow, which was overflowing for about 48 hours, did reach the West Fork of Portage Creek.
Normal flow conditions in the private sanitary sewer have been restored and the impacted area has been remediated.
As required by law, Water Reclamation Plant personnel also notified the Michigan Department of Environmental, Great Lakes and Energy at the Kalamazoo District Office and the Kalamazoo County Environmental Health Unit about the spill.
