KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo woman will spend four years in prison for her part in a “mailboxing” ring.
On Monday, 36-year-old Marie Jung was sentenced for bank fraud, two counts of mail theft, and aggravated identity theft.
Jung and a group of other individuals are accused of stealing checks, credit cards, driver’s licenses, and other identity documents from mailboxes, unattended purses, and parked cars.
Officials say the thieves also forged and altered checks, sometimes impersonating their victims and making the checks payable in the victims’ names.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the fraudulent activity last June and used surveillance footage, bank records, and witnesses to track down Jung.
She was arrested and admitted to the crime after she was found with the stolen checks along with equipment commonly used in forging checks. She said she was committing the crimes to support her meth habit.
There other people involved in the “mailboxing” ring, Beatrice Brown, Shadow Kornmiller, and Jessica Ledger, were also sentenced last spring.
