MARQUETTE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Graduates of Kalamazoo Central that are attending Northern Michigan University (NMU) may have an opportunity for financial relief thanks to a new scholarship.
Officials with Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) say that the donors are an anonymous couple that are alumni of Kalamazoo Central High School. One is also a graduate of NMU. The scholarship comes in the form of a $600,000 endowment to NMU.
The money will be reserved for Kalamazoo Central High School students who received the Kalamazoo Promise and choose to attend NMU. The funds will be used to help pay for room and board and books.
“The Promise covers tuition costs, but does not cover room, board and book expenses, which can still represent a substantial barrier to affording and completing a degree program,” KPS officials said in a statement.
Incoming NMU freshmen are eligible for the scholarship as long as they meet the following requirements:
- student must meet satisfactory academic progress requirements for financial aid
- Student must live in an NMU residence hall
- Student must be a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School.
Officials also note that this scholarship is renewable for up to four years
It is officially known as the “KCHS/NMU Alumni Room, Board and Books Scholarship.”
