KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A man has now been charged for the shooting death of a Wayland woman at his Kalamazoo apartment this week.
23-year-old John Jacob Spangenberg was charged with one count of open murder on June 4th at the Kalamazoo County District Court.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says Spangenberg admitted to officers that he shot 21-year-old McKenna Dutkiewicz at his apartment at the 1300 block of Jack Pine Way on Monday night around 10 p.m.
Dutkiewicz later died from injuries caused by the gunshot. The suspect claims that he thought the gun was unloaded at the time of the shooting. Police say the gunfire came during a gathering Spangenberg was holding,with multiple people witnessing the incident.
He will be returning back to court on June 23rd for a probable cause hearing.
