MICHIGAN (WKZO AM/FM) — There are some new concerning numbers regarding the coronavirus in Michigan.
The state confirmed 610 new cases on July 8th, which is the highest daily case total in seven weeks. 10 new deaths were also reported. As of that day Michigan had 67,237 positive cases and 6,015 total deaths, but the latest COVID-19 numbers can be found on our website here.
Because of this, some parts of the region are becoming a higher risk for the spread of the virus, especially West Michigan.
According to the MI Safe Start Map, the Grand Rapids region has been moved from a “medium-high” risk rating to a “high risk” rating due to a three-week rise in coronavirus cases as of July 4th.
In addition, the Upper Peninsula and the Traverse City region went from a “low” risk rating to now a “medium” risk and the Detroit region has gone from “medium” risk to “med-high” risk.
As a reminder, this map is separate from the reopening phases, so moving in risk factors does not open or shut down regions in any way. This map is used mainly to gauge where more cases are expected.
The Lansing area has stayed at a “high” risk phase ever since the outbreak at Harper’s Restaurant and Brew Pub in East Lansing in June.
The Kalamazoo and Jackson regions still remain at a “medium” risk level, but that could change as the state’s website says, “…data from both regions indicates they may increase in risk level shortly.”
The good news is that case rates and testing positivity have declined in the Saginaw region, so it remains in the “medium” risk level.
It’s unclear what the new risk levels may do for the future of reopening and moving into the next phases, but more information may come Thursday morning.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer will hold another press briefing with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. A live stream of that event can be watched here.
