CASSOPOLIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A 4th of July lake party in Cass County is going viral on social media for all the wrong reasons.
The video shows hundreds of people partying on a sandbar in Diamond Lake in Cassopolis on Saturday, with almost no social distancing and no facemasks in sight.
Former NBA player Rex Chapman shared the video on Twitter with the caption, “Diamond Lake in Cass County, Michigan just now: A COVID-19 Petri dish…”
Now, the organizers are receiving a lot of backlash, including threats.
WOOD-TV spoke to one of the party organizers who only wished to identify himself as Keith.
He said that he’s been throwing this party with other Cass County residents for about 30-years and did not want to stop this year. Keith added that the video does not show the people that were social distancing or that they warned people multiple times to spread out.
“…But the young kids want their freedom and have fun,” Keith told WOOD-TV.
Police have since issued a statement of their own on the matter, which can be viewed in full at this link.
