KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Due to concerns over the potentially dangerous illness coronavirus, a Western Michigan University (WMU) women’s basketball game has been postponed until a further notice.
WMU was originally scheduled to play against Miami University in Ohio on Wednesday, January 29. The game has been postponed because of two possible student cases of the coronavirus.
The two students in question have been quarantined. Officials say that both had recently returned from a trip to China, which is where the virus originated. Neither of the two are suffering from life-threatening symptoms and both are awaiting test results.
In a related matter, Central Michigan University (CMU) has postponed a men’s basketball game against Miami University, which was scheduled to take place on the night of Tuesday, January 28.
In Kalamazoo, radio station 1660 The Fan will not be broadcasting the game as originally scheduled.
Public health officials maintain that the risk of contracting coronavirus is very low and not an immediate threat to citizens.
The news of the game cancellation comes after three Michigan citizens were confirmed to not have the virus, while a fourth case is awaiting test results.
Health officials urge citizens to stay updated on the virus at Michigan.gov/Coronavirus and CDC.gov/Coronavirus.
