KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Sheriff’s Department is warning citizens about a new scam call that has been circulating in the area.
Kalamazoo Sheriff Richard Fuller says that this time of year is prime for scam calls.
“There is no shortage of people looking to get their hands into your cash,” Fuller said. “This is the season where that has really ramped up again. It’s not just the holidays, now it’s gonna be tax season, so you’re gonna get tons of phone calls.”
In the new scam, con artists call in regards to a warranty on a vehicle that the victim may not even own.
Sheriff Fuller says that he himself has been contacted by this phone scam.
“I got a phone call reminding me that my warranty is about up on my vehicle from a company that I have no warranty with, and they wanted to take my credit card over the phone and get my payment right now,” Fuller said. “Just be alert and know what you owe.”
Fuller also recommends letting calls go to voicemail before answering.
