KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A public comment period to share thoughts on the proposed settlement to clean up the Kalamazoo River is being extended.
Last month the Environmental Protection Agency and the Justice Department announced that NCR Corporation, one of the companies responsible for polluting the river with PCBs, would have to pay at least $245-million dollars to continue the cleanup at the Allied Paper superfund site which began more than 20 years ago.
The chemical was leaked into the river from the 1950’s into the 1970’s by several paper mill companies until environmental agencies began banning the practice and increased oversight.
Now, after the recent settlement was reached, federal officials are asking for the public’s opinion through February 18th to decide if any revisions should be made before final approval. The deadline was first January 16th but it has since been moved.
Residents can share their comments by emailing pubcomment-ees.enrd@usdoj.gov or mail Assistant Attorney General, U.S. DOJ-ENRD, P.O. Box 7611, Washington, D.C., 20044-7611.
A public meeting on the matter will also take place Tuesday January 6th at 6 p.m at the Otsego Township Hall.
